As a faculty member at USC’s Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases, Dr. Ara Sahakian has spearheaded groundbreaking advancements in gastroenterology, combining clinical excellence, innovation, and leadership. After specialized training in advanced endoscopy at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a further fellowship at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo, he established the first submucosal/third-space endoscopy program in Southern California. This program has enabled patients to access minimally invasive, cutting-edge procedures, including endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). At Keck Hospital, he led efforts to double the endoscopy volume and oversaw the development of a new, state-of-the-art endoscopy unit.
