What’s Asset-Backed Finance?
Not all private credit is the same. Asset-backed finance offers a distinction that matters.

Asset-backed finance explained
Asset-backed finance (ABF) is lending that’s backed by real assets and the payments those assets generate – rather than just a company’s promise to repay. Often, it’s tied to a pool of smaller loans or receivables (like auto loans, credit card balances or leases), so repayment isn’t dependent on any one borrower.

Why it matters for an investor’s portfolio
ABF can make private credit behave differently. Many deals are built with investor protections – like regular principal paydowns, performance tests and extra “cushion” (credit enhancement) – that can help limit losses if conditions worsen. That means ABF returns may rely less on a company refinancing at the end of a loan and more on the ongoing performance of the underlying assets, which can help improve resilience when corporate credit gets pressured.

The bottom line
If you want private credit exposure with an emphasis on collateral, structure and diversified payment streams, ABF may be worth considering as a complement within a diversified allocation.

ABF may help diversify risk over time
Some investors avoid alternatives because of illiquidity risk, but ABF can be different because principal is commonly repaid during the life of the deal, so the loan balance declines. With private equity and corporate direct lending, principal is often returned at maturity, which can concentrate risk near the end of the term.

This is why ABF may be worth considering to investors right now. Getting principal back earlier can reduce how much you still have at risk later on – lowering late-term concentration and giving you the potential for more flexibility to rebalance or redeploy capital as needed.

Why now?
The ABF market is massive – an estimated $7 trillion globally – but private capital still represents only a small slice of it. As traditional banks pull back from this type of lending, a gap opens up. And private investors are potentially well-positioned to help close it.
