Bite Founder: Future is Not Plastic
Bite’s Lindsay McCormick began her venture with toothpaste.

Bite founder and chief executive Lindsay McCormick said her company’s mission is simple: removing all plastics from personal care products that people use every day.
She believes that more and more people are open to changing their everyday routines to be more sustainable, and that creates a huge opportunity for the Marina del Rey-based company.

“If you are going to use a product every day, why not make it something that’s better for your body and better for the planet,” McCormick said.
McCormick founded Bite in 2018 after finding out that a huge number of plastic toothpaste tubes being disposed of ended up in the ocean or landfills.

“I started digging into whether there were plastic-free alternatives that I could use instead,” McCormick said. “That is when I learned about all of the harsh chemicals, the artificial flavors and ingredients that are in most toothpaste.”
She decided to make her own toothpaste but put it into small bite-size tablets that come in a glass container. From that, Bite was born.

“Since then, we have an entirely plastic-free oral care line,” McCormick said. “We have mouthwash tablets; we have the first and only plastic-free whitening gel and bamboo toothbrushes.”
And this month, it is releasing a bar soap, called Carbon Capture Cleanser. It will be sold on the company’s website.

McCormick incorporated kelp into the soap bar, and is donating a portion of the soap’s sales to the Blue Carbon Initiative, an organization of Conservation International, an Arlington, Virginia-based environmental advocacy group.

“What is amazing about kelp is that it actually sequesters more carbon than trees,” McCormick said. “You can grow it in the ocean. You don’t have to use fresh water, pesticides or land. It is an eco-friendly way to capture carbon from the atmosphere.”

Bite’s products are all manufactured in the U.S. by outside firms. The tablets are made in Southern California, and the soap bar is made on the East Coast.
In addition to its website, Bite’s products, except for the soap, are also available at Credo Beauty locations and the Erewhon Market chain in the Los Angeles area, McCormick said. She would not disclose sales figures.

“We specifically chose these vendors because they are really aligned with what we are as a brand,” she added.
