Amidst the pandemic, Bird’s practice continued with two high-stakes and impactful cases. He led a pro bono partnership on two COVID-19 class action lawsuits against the administrators at Terminal Island and Lompoc federal prisons for the insufficient measures and inhumane treatment that led to several deaths and thousands of infections. Through the tangible success in these matters, the American Civil Liberties Union awarded Bird and team the 2021 Humanitarian Award.
In an earlier class action win, Bird played a key role in securing a complete dismissal of a consumer protection class action brought against a software and medical device company in Arizona Federal Court. The case involved health care providers’ storage of patient medical records and x-ray images to facilitate remote diagnoses.
