AvalonBay, Abode Tapped for West LA Civic Center Makeover

AvalonBay Communities Inc. and Abode Communities have been selected to revitalize the West Los Angeles Civic Center.

The 8-acre property will be renamed West LA Commons, and the project will transform the space into a mixed-use community through the construction of 926 housing units, including 431 affordable units for tenants with low and moderate incomes.

It will also have open space accessible to the public; a 73,400-square-foot municipal office building; a redeveloped multipurpose center; a 20,900-square-foot community center for seniors; and more than 41,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

“Our vision for West LA Commons will bring equitable housing opportunities to a highly resourced neighborhood on the Westside,” Robin Hughes, president and chief executive of downtown-based Abode Communities, said in a statement. “The proposed mix of residential, commercial and civic uses will ultimately create a vibrant, interconnected neighborhood core for the community and residents alike.”

Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl said the “project is sure to be a welcome new asset in the community.”

The site currently houses municipal offices, a senior center and a shuttered courthouse.

West LA Commons will be designed by Koning Eizenberg Architecture, executive architect AC Martin, and landscape architect OLIN.

The city and county are expected to finish negotiating with AvalonBay and Abode Communities in March on some parameters for the project, as laid out in the request for proposal. The value of the contract hasn’t been disclosed.
