In an announcement on Sept. 28, AECOM said it had been working with the FAA in this capacity since the pandemic began.
“We’re excited by the opportunity to support this nationwide work, which is so critical to the aviation industry and the passengers who use their services,” AECOM President Lara Poloni said in the announcement.
It was not clear why the company chose to reveal this work at this moment.
AECOM and its predecessor companies have worked for the FAA for at least 40 years, according to the announcement.
Since the pandemic hit, AECOM said, it has completed 63 tasks for the FAA in 23 states, totaling more than 1,600 work hours.
One project involved AECOM bringing disinfection teams to FAA facilities for overnight cleaning to minimize disruptions to the agency’s airspace monitoring responsibilities.
The company said it placed rapid response teams close to each FAA site to respond within hours. The disinfecting procedures follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the announcement said.
“Our dedicated professionals are proud to support the FAA’s mission to keep America flying — mobilizing quickly and demonstrating each day a deep commitment to quality and safety,” Poloni said in the announcement.
Since the contract was revealed, AECOM announced a restructuring that flattened the management oversight of the company’s main design/consulting services business, of which this contract is part. The position of group president for design/consulting services Americas was eliminated, and Steve Morriss, the executive who held that post, stepped down. His responsibilities are now being handled by Poloni, who assumed the role of president in June.
AECOM did not provide financial details about the FAA contract.
The company has completed several projects to help public agencies combat the pandemic, including setting up temporary field hospitals in Chicago and New York.
