City officials set the stage for a Hollywood icon to be replaced by a housing development.

On June 25, the L.A. City Council voted to approve a zoning change at the site of Amoeba Music Inc.’s Hollywood store. The change paves the way for a planned 26-story retail and residential complex at the site — a project that begins by knocking down the sprawling music and entertainment store.

The independent music chain, with locations in Berkeley and San Francisco, has been at its Hollywood location since 2001. The store often doubles as a concert venue for many touring bands, hosting shows before audiences lined up between racks of used vinyl and CDs.

Amoeba sold the property to GPI Cos. in 2015 for $34 million, and it has been leasing the building from the new owner since then.

The new development at Amoeba’s site will contain 200 residential units with 10 set aside for very low-income households. It will also have 7,000 square feet of commercial space.

The location includes the 6400 Sunset Blvd., 1440-1460 N. Cahuenga Blvd., 6400-6416 W. Sunset Blvd., 1419 N. Ivar Ave., 1441-1453 N. Ivar Ave. and 1418 N. Cahuenga Blvd. addresses.

Much of Hollywood’s grittier side has been turned over for redevelopment in recent years. Amoeba Music has been vocal about plans to stay in Hollywood, though its new location has not yet been announced.
