Mid-Wilshire-based CIM Group Inc. acquired the Desmond, an 11-story, art deco office and retail building originally built in the late 1920s in the heart of the Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles.
Terms of the transaction, announced Oct. 16, were not disclosed.
Commercial real estate information firm CoStar Group Inc. listed Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management as the seller.
The 79,000-square-foot building at 5500 Wilshire Blvd. has 28,000 square feet of ground floor retail space, roughly 51,000 square feet of office space on upper floors and 67 parking spaces.
The building, which spans a block between South Burnside and South Dunsmuir avenues, was originally built in 1928 for the upscale Desmond’s and Silverwoods department stores.
Prominent architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed the Desmond, which was designated more than three decades ago as a historic-cultural monument. It was renovated in 1990, and preserves the striking architecture, terrazzo floors, ornate stone lobby, handcrafted gold-painted leaf ceilings, operable windows and rooftop sky deck. It is located four blocks from the La Brea/Wilshire station on Metro’s Purple Line subway. The station is scheduled to be completed in 2023.
