Saddled With Insurance

When it comes to transportation insurance, most freeway-addicted Angelenos think cars. Now, one local insurance brokerage is bucking that trend with a new product: horse coverage.

Momentous Insurance Brokerage launched its equine line last week. Products range from veterinary insurance, in case the horse is injured or sick, to liability, in case a horse damages something or someone. There are also commercial policies for those involved in training, racing, breeding and ranching.

The Van Nuys brokage had already signed up some clients before deciding to turn it into a specialty.

“Most people may not think of Southern California as a horse center, but there’s a whole other world that people don’t often see,” said Terri Peters, equine practice leader for Momentous. “Every weekend, there are lots of horse shows and other horse-related activities .”

Annual premiums vary. A life insurance premium on a show horse valued at $100,000 would be roughly $3,600 with payout at “fair market value” of the horse up to a maximum of $100,000. In contrast, a trainer who gives lessons to people on their own horses could get liability coverage for as little as $500 annually, in case a rider is injured. Among the underwriters are major insurers such as Fireman’s Fund.

For Peters, 52, running the practice is the ultimate combination of two passions: horses and insurance. She started riding horses at her home in Camarillo at age 5, and by 9 was entering competitions.

“I finally get to mix … horses with the other passion of mine: insurance,” she said.
