This $1.03 billion project is adding a 10-mile carpool lane and widening the northbound lanes of the freeway through the Sepulveda Pass. It’s the project best known for generating the “carmageddon” hype of last summer when the freeway was shut down for a weekend as half of the Mulholland Drive bridge was demolished. Kiewit Co., the company that built the original bridge nearly 50 years ago, is the general contractor, while the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is the supervising agency. Work began in 2009 and is expected to continue through 2013. Westside traffic tie-ups are expected to intensify over the next few months as work begins on flyover ramps at Wilshire Boulevard. “Carmageddon 2” is set for this summer as the other half of the old Mulholland Dr. bridge is demolished.
