In his annual State of the City speech on Monday, L.A. Mayor James Hahn proposed more funding for police, paramedics, after-school initiatives, violence prevention programs and housing.

Hahn, who will unveil his 2005-06 budget later this week, said he will ask for funds to hire 720 more police officers and 48 new paramedics, according to prepared remarks for Monday’s speech given in South L.A. The budget will also include funds for more gang prosecutors in the City Attorney’s office to help prepare for a proposed citywide gang injunction.

“Our city remains threatened by and in some cases terrorized by gangs who want to control too many of our neighborhoods,” Hahn said.

Hahn also proposed a $1.3 million increase in the L.A.’s Best after-school program, along with $500,000 for a new violence prevention program.

He said he also plans to put an additional $3 million in general fund dollars into the city’s affordable housing trust fund. And he unveiled a $2.7 million proposal to increase funding for unpaved alleys.
