A subsidiary of Sylmar-based Tutor Perini Corp. has recently nabbed two civil construction contracts in Minnesota worth a combined $101 million.
Black River Falls, Wisconsin-based Lunda Construction, which Tutor Perini acquired in 2011, was awarded both contracts earlier this month.
On June 11, the Minnesota Department of Transportation awarded Lunda Construction a contract valued at about $67 million for the Interstate 94 and Interstate 394 interchange project in Minneapolis.
The scope of work includes repairing 34 bridges and ramps along Interstates 394 and 94, between downtown Minneapolis and Highway 100, a few miles to the west. The project also includes maintenance work on a ramp, replacing the deck on a bridge that crosses over I-394 and other improvements.
Work is expected to begin next month, with substantial completion anticipated in the summer of 2027.
The second contract for Lunda Construction is for the construction of four bridges and 14 retaining walls along Highway 169 in Jordan, Minnesota, about 35 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis. This contract is valued at about $34 million.
Work on this project began in May with substantial completion anticipated by the end of 2027.
Growing the backlog
Both contract values have been added to the company’s backlog for the second quarter.
Tutor Perini added $2 billion worth of contracts to its backlog during the first quarter, including $1.2 billion for a tunnel project in Manhattan. That followed other major contract wins last year, including a $3.76 billion jail project in Manhattan and a $1.66 billion rail guideway project in Honolulu.
As of March 31, the company’s total project backlog stood at a record $19.2 billion, up 94% from the same date last year.
All of the contract wins have helped boost Tutor Perini’s stock price. As of June 17, the share price was nearly $42, just about double the price on the same date last year.
Tutor Perini is ranked the No. 1 general contractor in Los Angeles County by the Business Journal (page 17) based on 2024 billings here, with $981 million recorded here last year out of more than $3.7 billion total nationwide.
