LA500 2024: Meredith Stiehm

President, Writers Guild of America West

Stiehm is currently serving her second term as President of the Writers Guild of America West. She led the Guild through 2023’s 148-day strike and has been a guild member since 1994. She served on the group’s board for six years before becoming President. Stiehm was a writer and executive producer of “Homeland” for five years – winning the Emmy, Golden Globe, Writers Guild, and Peabody Awards for drama series. She was the co-creator and executive producer of “The Bridge,” winner of a 2013 Peabody Award, and creator and executive producer of the drama series “Cold Case.” Under Stiehm, the union issued a report last year criticizing ongoing media-industry consolidation for reducing jobs and won an October 2022 arbitration enabling writers to get back unproduced scripts. In late 2022l, the union negotiated tens of millions in back-pay settlements with Amazon Studios and Netflix. The Beverly Grove-based union won a historic, three-year industry battle forcing talent agencies to drop “packaging fees” on film/TV projects in February 2021.
