LA500 2024: Ilse Metchek

President, California Fashion Association

Metchek created the nonprofit California Fashion Association in 1995, in partnership with apparel manufacturers and leaders in the finance sector and other industries. It recently merged with California Retailers Association. Metchek will help with manufacturing efforts, international retailers interested in entering the market and fashion-related education programs. She previously served as executive director of the California Market Center and president of clothing brand White Stag Inc. while it was a division of Warnaco Group Inc. Metchek served on the board of the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp. She is currently on the Fashion Advisory boards of Santa Monica College, Fullerton College, and Los Angeles Trade Tech College.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
After testing your “big” idea and knowing that it is the right thing to do, there is always a way around the first “no” you get! The second and third one will be a “yes.”

What’s your favorite movie, all time and in any category?
“Casablanca” and (the original) “The Magnificent Seven.”

What’s at the top of your bucket list?
Writing a tome on the full history of my family for my children and grandchildren so they know where they came from.

What was your first car?
A yellow Dodge Dart.

Like to have it back?
Absolutely not!

What’s the best thing about living in Los Angeles?
The vast variety of things to do and places to go without class structures. There is no one “in” thing ever, and no reason to ever be bored!
