Chief Executive Providence St. John’s Health Center/Providence Los Angeles Coastal Service Area

Ricks has served as chief executive of Providence St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica for five years. Earlier this year, as part of a regional leadership restructuring, he was named chief executive of the Providence Los Angeles Coastal Service Area, with oversight over St. John’s Health Center and Providence Little Company of Mary Centers in Torrance and San Pedro. Prior to joining Providence, Ricks served as chief operating officer for Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
Personally: “No success in life can compensate for failure in the home.” Professionally: “Seek to understand before you seek to be understood and don’t postpone for perfection.” Exercise: “Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever!”

What’s your favorite movie, all time and in any category?
“Gladiator” – great acting and, believe it or not, it contains some good life/leadership lessons.

What’s at the top of your bucket list?
A trip to Australia and New Zealand.

What was your first car?
1979 Ford Mustang with red tape on the brake lights.

What’s the best thing about living in Los Angeles?
Consistent climate and I can snowboard, golf and surf all in the same day.

And the worst?
Traffic.
