Chair, Founder, National Institute for Excellence in Teaching

“Lowell is chair and founder of the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching. His $8.5 million gift established the Lowell Milken Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofits at the UCLA School of Law, whose goal is fostering the next generation of nonprofit lawyers, philanthropic leaders and policymakers. Milken also chairs London-based Heron International, a property development and investment company, as well as the National Realty Trust.

What is the best advice you ever got? Make the most of the educational opportunities afforded you at every level of your education and you will have the means for a productive and satisfying life.

What is your favorite film? “Saving Private Ryan.” A remarkable story about ordinary Americans from different levels of society who were called upon to risk their lives to win a war that would be the defining conflict of the 20th century.

What is at the top of your bucket list? I do not have a bucket list because I strive to take opportunities as my passion strikes.

What is the best thing about living in Los Angeles? The beauty of the geography and climate-the mountains, the ocean and the weather.”
