Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Monday beefed up his business leadership team with added focus on housing and development.

Villaraigosa announced he will move current deputy mayor for economic development, Bud Ovrom, to a newly created post of deputy mayor for commercial and residential development, effective April 2.

He also announced the hiring of Helmi Hisserich current regional administrator for Hollywood for the L.A. Community Redevelopment Agency as deputy mayor for housing and economic development policy.

“There is so much going on in the city in terms of housing and economic development projects from all the projects downtown to the port that the mayor felt it was necessary to expand the office’s focus in this area,” said Matt Szabo, spokesman for Villaraigosa.

Orvom, the former longtime city manager of Burbank largely credited with turning that city around, came to L.A. as former Mayor James Hahn’s choice to run the Community Redevelopment Agency. Villaraigosa moved Ovrom to his current post as deputy mayor for economic development.

As the deputy mayor for commercial and residential development, Ovrom’s focus will be “to partner effectively with commercial and residential developers to build an array of businesses and affordable, supportive workforce housing here,” Villaraigosa said in a statement.

Hisserich’s tasks as deputy mayor for housing and economic development policy will include beefing up the city’s small business outreach, serving as liaison to the port and overseeing federally funded workforce training programs.
