Chedraui, Harbor Freight on National List

Two Los Angeles County retail companies were named to the National Retail Federation’s list of top 100 U.S. retailers ranked by 2022 sales.

Included in the list were Chedraui USA, a grocery store chain in Commerce, which occupied the 57th position, and Calabasas-based hardware stores owner Harbor Freight Tools, at number 80.

The list, which was released earlier this month, was compiled for the federation, which is based in Washington, D.C., by Kantar Group plc, a marketing data, insight and consultancy company in London.

Chedraui USA had $7.5 billion in domestic sales last year, a 137% increase over its 2021 revenue. Last year’s figure takes into account the acquisition of Smart & Final, the warehouse grocery chain. Chedraui bought the chain for $620 million.

Chedraui USA is a subsidiary of Xalapa, Mexico-based Grupo Chedraui, a publicly traded grocery and department store chain. In addition to California, the auxiliary company operates stores in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and Nevada. Its three brands are Smart & Final, El Super and Fiesta Mart.

Harbor Freight Tools had domestic revenue of $5.4 billion, a sales growth of 13% from 2021. All of its stores are in the United States. Harbor Freight opened its 1,400th store in April in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

In August of last year the federation named Harbor Freight the fastest-growing company in the country, noting its 93% sales increase between 2020 and 2021. The company had revenue of $4.7 billion in 2021, compared with net sales of $2.4 billion in 2020.

As for this year’s list of top 100 retailers, longtime No. 1 Walmart Inc. held its top position with nearly $500 billion in U.S. retail sales last year. Amazon.com Inc. is in second place with sales of $232 billion, followed by Costco Wholesale Corp. ($164 billion), The Kroger Co. ($148 billion) and The Home Depot Inc. ($146 billion), according to the federation.
