A looming deadline for earthquake-resistant hospitals comes with some big price tags.
The Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center is under construction on a $644 million project to meet the 2030 date set by regulators for seismic upgrades. If that number isn’t impressive, try the $1.7 billion hospital replacement project at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in West Carson. And if that dollar figure still isn’t big enough, Santa Monica-based Rand Corp. estimates the cost to seismically upgrade all the hospitals in Los Angeles County will run between $8.7 billion and $39.5 billion.
“The financial burden this will impose is challenging particularly as we face the lasting financial impacts of the pandemic and determine the impacts that will have on our ability to serve our communities most in need,” said Justin Montoya, regional director of real estate strategy and operations for Providence Southern California.
