The Port of Los Angeles and GE Transportation have agreed to extend a digital data pilot program across all of the port’s terminals designed to improve cargo movement by streamlining information access.
The port’s Harbor Commission voted to extend a contract with GE last week for up to five years and an additional $12 million, extending a pilot program contract approved in November for one year with $1.4 million in funding.

“The GE portal is an investment in the long-term growth of the Port of Los Angeles and tells our stakeholders and customers that we take seriously our responsibility to find new ways to drive efficiencies and optimization,” Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, said in a statement.
The port is the first in the United States to have such a digitized system of data collection to create better access to information on cargo movement, such as when and where containers are arriving among trucking companies and other stakeholders.
The first round of the pilot program included the largest cargo terminal at the port, APMT, shipping lines MSC and Maersk, and about 10 retailers and cargo owners.
The new extension plans to include all cargo terminals at the port, up to 15 shipping lines and more freight owners.
The agreements are subject to review by the Los Angeles City Council in the next two to three weeks.
