Despite Better Quarter, Hot Topic Outlook Cautious

Hot Topic Inc. on Wednesday maintained its fourth-quarter profit outlook after reporting third-quarter net income rose 11 percent, beating expectations. But the trendy teen retailer warned it expects same-store sales to drop by a percentage in the low single digits due to the uncertain economy.

City of Industry-based Hot Topic after the market close said it earned $7.4 million (17 cents per share) for the quarter ended Nov. 1, compared with $6.7 million (15 cents) a year ago. Revenue rose 5 percent to $197 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters on average expected income of 16 cents per share on revenue of $196 million.

Combined same-store sales at Hot Topic and Torrid locations open at least a year rose 1 percent in the quarter.

The company said it expects earnings per share of between 25 cents and 28 cents in the current quarter, based on an expected decline in same-store sales, due both to cash-strapped consumers and this year’s shorter holiday shopping season. Analysts expect earnings of 26 cents per share for the quarter.

Hot Topic’s shares, which fell 4 percent in regular trading to close at $7.10, rose 2 percent to $7.26 in after-market activity.
