World Surf League in Santa Monica said Turner Sports’ live streaming sports platform B/R Live will broadcast its Founders’ Cup of Surfing and other WSL events throughout the season.
B/R Live also will host video-on-demand content, replays and highlights for WSL in the U.S.
The league runs more than 180 surfing events, including the Men’s and Women’s Championship Tours, the Big Wave Tour, Qualifying Series and Junior and Longboard Championships. Its Founders’ Cup was held in Lemoore on May 5-6, in a pool featuring a “a 700-yard, high-performance, bi-directional wave.”
The league also expanded its links with CBS Sports, which will televise more than 40 hours of surfing across CBS and CBS Sports Network.
“Our expanded national broadcast and live streaming platforms will help to showcase what our surf fans already know and love: surfing is an incredible sport that delivers excitement, athleticism, and engaging content,” WSL Chief Executive Sophie Goldschmidt said in a statement.
Red Letter Day
Billionaire Jim Jannard provided a sneak peek at his latest invention – Hydrogen – May 19 at RED Studios Hollywood.
The smartphone, or “media machine,” as the Oakely Inc. founder calls it, features a holographic display that Red Digital Cinema Camera Co. in Irvine developed in partnership with Leia Inc. in Menlo Park.
Jannard also founded Red Digital, which makes professional digital cameras and operates RED Studios. The company started taking Hydrogen preorders last year, and has scheduled the launch for August.
Only select entertainment industry professionals have been able to get a glimpse of the phone so far, including director David Fincher and actor Brad Pitt.
The event was reserved for RED fans who communicate via the online forum, reduser.net.
“You will see Hydrogen and H4V, talk to Leia about the workflow, hear A3D, talk to the Hydrogen Network team about channel creation, and see breadboard prototypes of upcoming 3D/4V cameras for a higher grade of image capture,” Jannard posted in April.

New Ad Shop
Nick Platt, former executive creative director for Omnicom’s RAPP LA and RAPP London, officially launched LO:LA, an El Segundo-based ad shop specializing in brand design and development, as well as video, social, digital and experiential design.
Platt said “clients are paying too much money for too little work,” and that LO:LA is “nimble, quick and cost-efficient without sacrificing quality.”
“For years, I carried a notebook where I would write down everything that I would do differently in advertising and at the agency level,” he said in a statement. “Those ideas and mantras began to take shape, and that’s how LO:LA was born – out of necessity to cut out the BS and focus on great work.”
The agency’s soft launch was in 2017, and its client roster already includes Cycle Gear, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, GRRRL, Halo Circus, Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes.
Several of Platt’s former RAPP co-workers have joined his new shop including Rosanne Ramos, head of client relations, and Creative Director Robert Bridwell. LO:LA has nine employees.
