LABJ Insider: Celebrating the Disruptors
Los Angeles Business Journal Editor Scott Robson

At a time of so much uncertainty and so many challenges, it’s nice to have a reason to celebrate.

That’s exactly what hundreds of executives, entrepreneurs and business owners found themselves doing (remotely, of course) at the Business Journal’s Disruptor Awards last week.

We had the honor of participating in the event and soaking up the positive energy in the (virtual) room.

If you’re looking for a tonic for the times, counting down the 25 fastest growing private companies in Los Angeles in front an appreciative and engaged audience is guaranteed to boost your spirits.

Soaking up the stories shared by the honorees offers another uplifting relief.
The Social Responsibility Award went to Golden Star Technology Inc., a Cerritos-based company that provides clients with IT and AV solutions. Founder and Chief Executive JP Wang shared a family business secret.

“With a family business, the advantage is we can talk about business all the time,” he said with a laugh. On a more serious note, Wang added a grateful perspective, “In 2020, we are still in business, and we are still keeping all of our employees. That’s very meaningful to us,” he said.

Ship & Shore Environmental claimed the Sustainability Award, and the company’s chief executive and president, Anoosheh Oskouian, had a reminder for all about the importance of thinking green. “Every person has to pay attention to … the conservation of electricity and water and recycle the materials we use. As an individual, you do make a difference. We all make a difference. … Every single company does count.”

Eravant Inc. Chief Executive Wendy Shu accepted the Accelerator Award for her company, which made the biggest year-over-year move on the Business Journal’s list. Shu used her acceptance screen time to look ahead. “I’m most excited about the future technologies that we’re enabling. Self-driving vehicles. Remote surgery. Keeping our country safe. I feel very honored to do that,” she said.
