THE LATEST: Soon-Shiong in March invested an additional $39 million in NantKwest Inc., the biotech company he founded in 2015. In September, the billionaire physician and businessman’s diversified holding company, NantWorks, created NantG Mobile, a gaming and esports joint venture. NantWorks is drafting construction plans for an esports arena adjacent to the El Segundo headquarters of the Los Angeles Times, which Soon-Shiong purchased last year.

BACKGROUND: As a physician, Soon-Shiong developed therapies for diabetes and cancer. These include Abraxane, which is used for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, lung cancer and advanced pancreatic cancer. His umbrella company, NantWorks, oversees Soon-Shiong’s health care, technology and communications businesses.

WORTH NOTING: Soon-Shiong topped the Business Journal’s 2018 list of Wealthiest Angelenos with a net worth estimated at $21.6 billion.
