Tinder Becomes More Specific; Sinemia launches new movie pass; SpaceX gets $130M contract

SpaceX Awarded Air Force Contract

Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp., colloquially known as SpaceX, has been selected by the United States Air Force to launch a new satellite into space, SoCal Tech reports. The Hawthorne-headquartered aerospace company will be awarded $130 million to complete the project, according to a contract released by the Department of Defense. Work on the project to launch the Air Force Space Command-52 satellite will take place in Hawthorne and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Dating App Refines Algorithm

Tinder, the millennial’s favorite dating app run out of West Hollywood, is beginning to test a feature to make its matches more specific. Available only to paying “Tinder gold” and “Tinder plus” subscribers, the service analyzes profile data to create clusters of users that are likely to have similar interests. TechCrunch reports that between the two “gold” and “plus” options, Tinder has roughly 3.5 million paid subscribers. In addition to testing the feature in the United States, the feature has gone live in U.K., Germany, Brazil, France, Canada, Turkey, Mexico, Sweden, Russia and the Netherlands.

MoviePass Rival Launches New Pass

Los Angeles-based online ticketing platform Sinemia Inc. announced June 22 that it will offer a family ticket plan starting at $9 for a two-person showing, dealing a direct blow to MoviePass, which reported this week it will be raising its prices. MoviePass has already seen its cash deficit increase in the last year, and TechCrunch reports that its monthly losses in May totaled roughly $40 million. Sinemia’s pass, which no longer requires a physical card for validation, can become pricier if purchased for a family, nearly 10 times the original cost. Despite that, Sinemia remains at nearly 2.6 million active users.
