David Kaplan helps oversee Ares Management, a global alternative asset manager with about $112 billion in assets under management as of March 31. Kaplan is a member of the management committee and serves on the seven-member governing group that controls the firm. He joined Ares in 2003 from Shelter Capital Partners, where he was a senior principal. Prior to Shelter, he served as a senior partner of Apollo Management and its affiliates and as a member of the investment banking department at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corp. Kaplan currently serves as chairman of the boards of Neiman Marcus Group Ltd. and Smart & Final Stores Inc. He also serves on the board of directors of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
