Layoffs as Hollywood Nursing Home, Subject of Complaints, to Close

An East Hollywood nursing home that has been the subject of a flood of complaints for patient abuse and neglect will close this week, with nearly 130 workers to lose their jobs.

Brier Oak on Sunset, one of roughly 500 owned by Genesis HealthCare of Pennsylvania, is a skilled nursing facility with 159 beds at 5154 Sunset Blvd. It will close Friday, administrators said, with its 128 employees to be laid off by December.

The state Employment Development Department announced the layoffs this week in a Warn Report about pending job terminations in Los Angeles County.

The facility has received at least two dozen patient complaints a year for the past five years, according to the state Department of Health Services. There were 51 complaints last year.

State fines connected to Brier Oaks patient care, abuse, rights and medication of its mostly elderly patients totaled nearly $79,000 since 2009, according to the DHS.

“We’re not able to comply with Department of Health Regulations,” Hazel de la Cruz, its admissions director, said of the closure.

She said the facility is now focused on finding suitable homes for its 60 remaining residents.
