The Business Journal won 15 national and local journalism awards handed out over the June 24-25 weekend.

The Redondo Beach-based Alliance of Area Business Publishers, a trade group of regional business publications, awarded the Business Journal the Bronze in the Best Newspaper/Large category at its annual conference, held in Dallas. Judges cited the “scope and authoritative writing” of the past year.

AABP judges awarded the Business Journal four Golds.

Reporter Henry Meier won for Explanatory Journalism for his story on a trade dispute over garlic.

“Meier takes what could be a drab story, about a garlic trade dispute between the United States and China, and turns in into a fun read. Excellent research and writing that shows the potential impact for the state’s garlic industry,” the judges wrote.

Meier also won Gold for Best Body of Work.

Jonathan Diamond – who was editor of the Business Journal during the period covered by this year’s awards and now serves as editor of signature publications and conferences – won a Gold in the Editorial category for his piece calling for insurance for gun owners.

“In the face of stubborn attitudes about guns on both sides,” the judges wrote, “this is the kind of ground-breaking wisdom the country needs.”

The Business Journal took home two design awards as well. A Gold for Feature Layout for the “Immigrant Entrepreneurs” special report and a Silver for Best Overall Design.

“The design handles both short stories and feature spreads with great aplomb. The stories are easy to browse and navigate, even on pages with multiple elements,” the judges said.

The Los Angeles Press Club’s 59th annual Southern California Journalism Awards, held downtown on June 25, saw the Business Journal take home eight First Place awards.

Real estate reporter Daina Beth Solomon was named Journalist of the Year and photographer Ringo H.W. Chiu was acknowledged as Photojournalist of the Year.

Other firsts were taken by David Nusbaum, for sportswriting; Jonathan Diamond, editorial writing; Henry Meier, news feature; Solomon, personality profile; and Meier and Solomon, investigative reporting. Kristin Skaggs-Kirby, Jennifer Rzepka and Jasmine Mo of the Business Journal’s design team took first place for the “Immigrant Entrepreneurs” feature. In addition, Kristin Marguerite Doidge took home second-place awards for news feature and entertainment news or feature. Newsdesk editor Tom Hicks won a third-place award for headline writing.

The Business Journal’s sister papers also scored some honors.

The San Diego Business Journal won three Silver awards from the AABP and the San Fernando Valley Business Journal won a Silver and Gold. The Valley paper also earned a third-place design award as well as three third-place reporting awards from the Press Club.
