Net Worth: $1.53 billion, up 4.8 percent

LAST YEAR: $1.46 billion

AGE: 71

RESIDENCE: Holmby Hills

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Communications, real estate, art

THE MONEY: Wealth invested in stocks, bonds, commercial real estate, art, hedge funds, oil and gas, and West L.A. waterless urinal firm Falcon Waterfree Technologies. Real estate market has been robust; added to Pacific Northwest portfolio by buying first Portland, Ore., property. Art collecting remains highly valued. Hedge fund and oil and gas investments didn’t do as well this year, but statewide drought has driven waterless urinal sales.

THE BUZZ: Energized by prospect of second President Clinton, Nathanson has donated to Hillary’s campaign; waiting to host fundraiser until after she clinches nomination. Lifelong Democrat, knows Clinton from her days as attorney and first lady to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. Nathanson, who founded Falcon Communications in 1975, said Hillary won him over when she represented him almost 30 years ago in acquisition of some Arkansas cable systems. Made much of fortune by selling Falcon Communications to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen for $3.7 billion in 1999. Following year made substantial investment in West L.A. waterless urinal maker Falcon Waterfree Technologies. Still serves as chairman. Other pet pastimes and causes include collecting modern art and working with Pacific Council on International Policy, of which he became co-chairman earlier this year. Spends couple of months a year at family’s Aspen, Colo., compound.
