Therapy Firm Wades Into Deprivation

Jim Hefner, founder of Pasadena float therapy center Just Float Inc., wants to bring a more luxurious experience to those looking to relax inside a sensory deprivation tank.

Though some people might choose the inexpensive option of hanging out in a pool or taking a long, warm bath, the center believes it will get plenty of customers. In fact, the center, which recently opened its doors to the public, has 11 rooms, which it says makes it the world’s largest float spa.

Its tanks are filled with warm saltwater and also block out light and outside sound to help with relaxation. It has one open tub for those who feel claustrophobic, which also complies with standards mandated by the Americans With Disabilities Act.

“Our float cabins, as we like to call them, they’re the size of small rooms,” Hefner said. “You step through the door and the lights are on and music is playing. You push a little button and the lights fade down and the music fades out five minutes later. It’s all very controlled and peaceful.”

A one-hour float session costs $60, but prices go down to $40 or $50 each if you buy several in advance.

Hefner said his goal was to create a more welcoming environment compared to other float centers that often feature narrow tanks with small doors and no light or music. The center’s rooms also have a private shower for guests to wash off the saltwater afterward.

Hefner said he launched the business after experiencing his first float session more than two years ago.

“(I) thought that was amazing. Why is this not everywhere?” he said.
