Aldi, a German discount supermarket chain, announced plans today to open 45 stores employing more than 1,100 in Southern California by the end of the year.

While the first eight stores opening March 24 are outside Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Daily News reports that several of the 12 additional stores scheduled to open between April and July will be local. Locations in Los Angeles County will include Cerritos, Covina, La Puente, La Verne and Inglewood.

Aldi, whose headquarters are in Essen, Germany, operates nearly 1,500 stores in 32 U.S. states. Representatives said in a statement that rolling out Aldi in Southern California, “marks a significant achievement in the company’s five-year strategic plan to open 650 new stores across the nation.”
