Denim Maker Fashions Plan For Startups

Los Angeles is home to myriad co-working spaces for tech startups and entrepreneurs, from the stylishly upscale NeueHouse in Hollywood to the female-friendly Paper Dolls studio in Brentwood.

But Michael Harb, president of downtown L.A. denim designer M. Anthony Inc., has created a space specifically for budding manufacturers in the Fashion District.

Last month, Harb launched a program called Rent a Fashion District Desk that gives new clothing makers access to office space and equipment as well as business advice from him and M. Anthony staff.

“The whole idea is to get people in to guide them the right way,” he said.

It costs $250 a month to rent a desk and $400 for more space and sewing equipment. Manufacturing services require an additional fee.

One bonus is that renters work out of a space at the front of M. Anthony’s store and have access to local and international wholesalers who often do business with the denim maker.

“This (program) would be more of a place where they can come learn and develop and produce their own garment,” he said. “It’s really giving them the opportunity to go out and create their own line.”
