L.A. Ready for its Olympic Close-Up

Only six months of planning time may pose a challenge for many American cities to make an effective bid to host the Olympics. However, LA 2024 organizers say they are ready for the Wednesday deadline of their first major submission to the International Olympic Committee since it was selected as America’s candidate city in September, according to Athletics Business.

“In a very real sense, L.A. is virtually a plug-and-play opportunity for the 2024 Games,” LA 2024 chairman Casey Wasserman said. “All the basic components are here or are being built. In fact, 97 percent of the needed venues exist, are planned or will be temporary. This is unprecedented in Olympic bidding.”

The bidding process began late for Los Angeles, after previously selected Boston dropped out due to funding concerns and rising public opposition. But LA 2024 organizers point out that a poll showed 81 percent public support here plus the variety of turnkey venues, including UCLA (serving as the athletes village), USC (as the media village), Staples Center, Microsoft Theater, StubHub Center and Santa Monica beach.

The bid would also make use of a new NFL stadium, which will be built for the relocating Rams, and benefit from $270 million of planned upgrades to the Coliseum, to be paid for by USC.
