L.A. Businesses Work on Equality For LGBT Hires

Nearly a dozen L.A. companies nailed a perfect 100 for their commitment to workplace equality for LGBT employees, according to a Human Rights Campaign Foundation report. The activist organization’s 2017 Corporate Equality Index, released last week, scores major companies on the strength of their policies about discrimination, benefits, LGBT inclusion, and public commitment to LGBT equality.

“We want to make sure people feel involved and engaged, so they can bring their whole self to the company,” said Lucy Kishiue, principal manager of diversity inclusion at Southern California Edison, which scored top marks.

The company provides equal benefits to married couples and domestic partners, offers transgender employees insurance coverage for transition surgery, and created a group of 250 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender employees that can send feedback to senior leadership.

Another on the list, CBRE Group Inc., has a 260-member LGBT & Allies Network Group that has helped make sure the real estate firm offers equal benefits for opposite- and same-sex spouses; mentors LGBT employees; and provides awareness training.

“Being in a culture where I can be open and be myself makes me a better performer,” said Managing Director Tim Schroeder, co-executive sponsor of the group.
