Redstone Settlement Could Prevent Trial, Spectacle

A tentative settlement has finally been reached in the soap-opera like legal battle over the mental capacity of ailing media mogul Sumner Redstone.

If approved by a judge, the agreement would end the prospect of a high profile trial focusing on the mental competence of the former Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp. chairman.

The tycoon’s former girlfriend Manuela Herzer had filed a lawsuit last November which alleged Redstone, 92, was not mentally fit when he removed her from his estate plan and as his health care agent.

The suit started as a personal matter but raised questions about his ability to lead two media giants and following pressure from investors and analysts Les Moonves stepped in as chairman of CBS with Philippe Dauman taking over Viacom.

The reported settlement would pay Herzer a sum in the tens of millions, reports the New York Times.
