Second Sight, Ceres Among this Week’s Movers

The Los Angeles Business Journal’s index of the largest local public companies rose slightly for the week. The weighted LABJ index ticked up about 1 percent to close at 232, with losers outpacing gainers 86 to 63. Six companies closed the week unchanged.

Among stocks trading above $1, Sylmar’s Second Sight Medical Products Inc., a maker of an artificial retina for blind patients, was one of the week’s leading gainers. Shares rose 12 percent to close at $14.27 on Friday.

Agricultural biotech Ceres Inc. was also one of the week’s leading gainers. Shares rose 40 percent to close at $2.38 on Friday, after the Thousand Oaks company announced earlier this week it was awarded a patent for a soybean genetic sequence that could be licensed to commercial seed developers.

Nova Lifestyle Inc., the Commerce furniture designer and manufacturer, was one of the week’s leading losers. Shares fell 32 percent to close at $2.26 Friday one day after the company announced a plan to sell $4 million in stock.
