Retailer Collars Deal For Dog Cops

Suzanne Isabelle Simmons’ business has gone to the dogs – and not just any dogs, but the elite bomb-sniffing, perpetrator-apprehending, vehicle-inspecting canines that make up the Los Angeles Airport Police K9 Team.

As such, the contract that Simmons won in May through her L.A. pet supply business, Purr-Fect Growlings Inc., is not just any contract: It calls for her to provide all nonfood supplies for the canine team, the largest of its kind at any U.S. airport, according to the Homeland Security and Intelligence Section that oversees the team.

Simmons will provide the airport’s more than three dozen Belgian Malinois with everything from flea and tick prevention products, leashes and water bowls to harnesses and toys.

Simmons is certified as a woman and minority business owner, a distinction she said has increased her chances of winning this and other contracts.

Winning this deal was particularly sweet: Her company won a one-year dog supply contract for the airport police in 2008, but didn’t win it again until now.

What’s more, the size of the contract has grown from $20,000 to $25,000 since then.

A retired teacher, Simmons sells pet supplies such as bandanas, dog T-shirts and toys online. Without winning canine team bids in recent years, she’s had to shift efforts to develop and sell new products, such as pet travel kits. She said winning the contract again will be a big boost for her small business.

“It will be a major chunk right now,” she said.
