Port Numbers Up Despite Cargo Diversion

Despite congestion at the harbor and reports of cargo being diverted to other West Coast ports, the Port of Los Angeles saw a slight uptick in cargo traffic last month over the same month a year earlier.

The number of containers moving through the port in December increased 1 percent to 658,567. Imports rose 4.4 percent compared with December 2013, while exports fell 12 percent. Port officials said recent export declines are largely thanks to gains in the U.S. dollar over other currencies, which makes American products more expensive abroad.

For all of 2014, cargo traffic at the port ticked up 6 percent over 2013, enough to make it the port’s third-biggest year. Only the pre-recession years of 2006 and 2007 saw more cargo pass through the Los Angeles port.

The neighboring Port of Long Beach is expected to release its December and full-year figures next week.
