Chemical-Laden Waste Water Being Dumped into Pits in Kern County

Oil producers in Kern County are dumpling contaminated wastewater into hundreds of unlined pits currently operating without the proper permits, the Los Angeles Times reports. Water officials with the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board completed inspections this week and found more than 300 previously unidentified waste sites. Kern County accounts for at least 80 percent of California’s oil production.
