Burger Chain Wants Bite Of L.A. Market

McDonald’s, Wendy’s and, er, Checkers & Rally’s. It’s the third name that probably won’t ring any bells to many Angelenos.

The burger drive-through from Tampa, Fla., might claim 800 restaurants in 28 states, but it only has 12 locations in the city of Los Angeles. The chain has ambitions to fan out further across the city and has scouted more than 400 sites ripe for franchises.

The 30-year-old company knows it is up against competition from national fast-food rivals, but claims to be armed with a powerful weapon: rock-bottom prices. No more than $4 for a burger and fries – and possibly less.

“Our consumer is a hard-working consumer that literally only has $2, $3, $4 in their pocket for lunch,” said Senior Vice President Jennifer Durham. “When you try to go out to eat at that price point, there’s few places that give you that value like we do.”

She thinks the fries will lure customers, too.

“We’re going to be the best 5,000 calories you can spend,” said Durham.

Checkers & Rally’s will battle the competition not only for customers, but also for franchisees. Durham said her company should draw interest because the stores are drive-through-only spots that operate on compact – thus low-rent – spaces. The fast foodery’s next opening is slated later this month for a Wal-Mart in Moreno Valley.
