Delivering: Brian Silverman sings Karrie Wolfe ‘Happy Birthday’ in Marina del Rey.

You’d think Brian Silverman, a veteran of seven years playing guitar for the national tour of “Jersey Boys,” wouldn’t get stage fright. But he is nervous about his newest gig.

The musician and singer – a 1994 graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music – is the first L.A. employee of Rockstar Singing Telegrams, which sends an actual musician to belt out tunes at surprise parties and other special occasions.

“It’s kind of terrifying,” said Silverman, 44, of Hollywood. He showed up at his first few gigs in full glam rock regalia, in keeping with the company’s ’80s-themed repertoire. “But I’m looking forward to someday doing a telegram for a rock star, maybe even one of my music idols.”

Rockstar is the brainchild of Jeff Silverman, no relation to Brian, who founded the company in Portland, Ore., in 2009. The company typically charges $200 for a telegram, which includes a few songs, as well as a rose, chocolates or balloons, depending on the recipient and the occasion. Customers can choose from a set list of classics that includes Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” and Queen’s “We are the Champions,” though requests can also be arranged.

“We don’t do clowns, and we don’t do gorillas,” said Jeff Silverman. “You’re getting a working pro musician with a guitar to sing an epic rock song.”

Jeff Silverman, who sings in a classic rock band up north, has so far handled all telegram deliveries in the greater Portland area. He hired Brian Silverman, whom he met through an online ad, to handle telegram duties in Los Angeles and is spending a few hundred dollars a month on Google Inc. search ads in order to get the word out.

While the company’s fee is roughly double the cost of many local competitors, Jeff Silverman insisted his company’s product stands out from the crowd.

“We really thought that the ’80s rock-star brand could take off in Los Angeles,” said Jeff Silverman. “That’s our angle.”
