Whisper Appoints New President, Reveals Use Stats

Whisper, the anonymous social media website and app company, has revealed its number of monthly active users for the first time.

In a blog post today, the company said it has 10 million active monthly users who open the app at a rate of 1 million times an hour. A spokeswoman for the Santa Monica company declined to disclose prior usage numbers.

Whisper was spun out of self-destructing text messaging company TigerText in 2012 and is a popular online bulletin board for posting anonymous pictures overlaid with text confessions.

The company competes with similar apps like Secret and Yik Yak for attention from millennials, who want a private, sometimes gossipy social media experience rather than the more open and public sharing that Facebook and Twitter provide.

Though Whisper has raised $61 million in investments and has 10 million monthly active users, it has yet to make much money from its app.

That appears to be why the company also announced today that it has appointed Mark Troughton as its first president. Troughton comes from pre-paid card company Green Dot of Pasadena, where as president he led its revenue growth efforts.

“We are excited about Mark’s passion for businesses with network effects, his unparalleled insight and leadership, and the fact that he played such a pivotal part in Green Dot’s growth,” said a company spokeswoman.
