What do you think of West Hollywood’s fur ban?

I am a vegetarian for animals so I think using fur is inhumane. Stella McCartney is one of my favorite designers and has managed to maintain her status as a premier designer without slaughtering a single animal. There are several fake-fur options out there now that feel fantastic.

I’m a fashion publicist who’s also vegetarian and staunchly anti-fur. While this does seem like a harsh measure – especially considering the proliferation of high-end designer stores located in WeHo – it’s a first step toward eradicating the incredibly cruel and unnecessary trend of fur as a fashion item.

While I believe the fur industry is inhumane, I think the ban is unnecessary. Unless the ban is related to the economics, health and safety of the community, I am not sure government has to play a direct role. If the residents of West Hollywood do not want to purchase fur products, they can avoid retailers who provide those products. And over time, those retailers will either cease to carry fur products or they will leave West Hollywood.

Can we still buy meat in West Hollywood? While I admire those who eschew meat in the name of preserving our planet, it is not against the law – yet – to buy and eat meat, as long as it’s not an endangered species. I think the same should apply to buying and wearing fur and leather products.
