Fire Damages Magic Mountain Coaster

A fire broke out Monday afternoon at Six Flags Magic Mountain’s closed Colossus wooden coaster, which is set to be transformed next year into a hybrid wooden-metal coaster.

The Los Angeles Fire Department extinguished the fire at the Valencia theme park, which was started while work was being done to disassemble the ride. Photos posted online show a small chunk of the track completely destroyed.

The park was not open Monday and there were no injuries, officials said. Damages were not immediately available.

The 36-year old wooden roller coaster closed on Aug. 16 but was scheduled to undergo a makeover to reopen next spring as the Twisted Colossus, maintaining its wooden structure and adding on a smooth tubular metal track. It’s unclear if the fire will delay opening of the new ride.

The Twisted Colossus would be a four-minute ride with 5,000 feet of track, making it the longest hybrid coaster in the world. It would feature inversions where the train slows down upside down, an element where two trains pass through an overbanked turn facing each other, creating the illusion that riders can reach out and touch one another. It also will feature a 360-degree role and a 128-foot drop at 80 degrees.

Magic Mountain is owned by Six Flags Entertainment Corp., a publicly traded company in Grand Prairie, Texas.
