Los Angeles International Airport continued its growth streak last month, reporting solid gains in both passengers and cargo over October 2013, according to figures released Wednesday.

The number of passengers moving through the airport rose 6.4 percent in October compared to the same month last year, as more than 5.9 million passengers traveled through LAX. Between January and the end of October, 59.4 million passengers traveled through LAX, a 6.3 percent increase over the same period last year.

This year’s uptick puts LAX on pace for its busiest year ever. The airport’s current record was set in 2000, when it saw 67.3 million passengers Last year came close with 66.7 million passengers. At its current pace, LAX should see about 70 million passengers this year.

Mail and freight cargo rose last month, too, increasing 7.8 percent over October last year. That could be due to more United States importers using air freight to avoid ongoing congestion issues at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
