The Port of Los Angeles saw cargo volume rise 4.6 percent in October over the same month a year ago, the agency reported Monday.

More than 715,000 containers moved through the port last month. Imports grew 7.2 percent, though exports dropped 6.7 percent compared to October 2013.

Through October, more than 7 million containers passed through the port this year, a 7.5 percent increase over the same period last year. Port officials said that reflects the fact that bigger ships are calling on the port.
