American Apparel Delaying Payments to Suppliers, Report Says

American Apparel Inc. can’t seem to keep itself out of the news.

The New York Post reported on Wednesday that the struggling downtown L.A. clothing chain has been delaying payments to key suppliers by as much as 60 days due to lack of cash from a disappointing holiday season.

Jerome Reisman, a partner at Reisman Peirez Reisman Capobianco, a Garden City, New York, law firm whose clients include apparel-industry finance companies, told the paper that some fabric suppliers and other vendors are getting paid 60 days late.

A spokesman for American Apparel said that Reisman has never represented American Apparel and has no inside information about the company. He “therefore has no basis to engage in any credible analysis of the company,” the spokesman said.

“The holiday promotion is on track and on budget and the company’s liquidity is better than it has been in a very long time,” the spokesman said, adding that the company has been “improving the accounts payable function” and expects “continued improvements in the weeks and months to come.”

The company also refuted an earlier New York Post report that said American Apparel was planning to slow production at its L.A. manufacturing operations as a cost-savings move. In an email, a spokeswoman for the company said American Apparel’s factory was not slowing down, but rather returning to a more standard schedule after ramping up production for the holiday season.

Shares of American Apparel fell 4 cents, or 4 percent, on Wednesday to close at $1.03.
