Mattress manufacturer Serta Simmons Holdings of Hoffman Estates, Ill. will close its Compton plant early next year and lay off 94 people, the company told the state’s Employment Development Department.

The layoffs will begin Jan. 5, Serta Simmons said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, required by the state when a company plans to do large layoffs.

The company would not comment for the story, other than to say that it doesn’t discuss employee matters publicly.

In fall of 2013, Serta Simmons Holdings announced it was consolidating the supply chains for its two brands, Serta and Simmons, into one operation. Since then, the company has reduced the number of its domestic plants to 23 from 40.

The parent company manufactures mattresses under the Serta and the Beautyrest brands, which operate independently.
