Sunset Strip’s Famed Key Club to Close

Historic Sunset Strip hotspot the Key Club will close its doors March 15, the club’s manager announced Monday.

The West Hollywood live music venue, founded in the 1960s as Gazzami’s, once had a marquee name when it booked acts such as the Doors and Tom Petty.

The venue has more recently booked large acts such as Kanye West and the Black Eyed Peas, but apparently failed to generate sufficient ticket sales to keep the lights on.

Key Club operations manager Ian Shepp said the club plans to go out with a bang, and encouraged people to patronize other independently-operated venues in the area, including the The Roxy, the Whisky and the Viper Room.

“It has been an honor and privilege to share our passion for music with you. We hope that you will continue to support the remaining independent live music venues on Sunset Strip – our neighbors,” Shepp said in a statement.

There will be a new tenant in the space, Shepp said, though he did not say who.
