Who’s Who In Banking & Finance: Terry O’Steen

How did you get into the credit union field?

In the 1990s, as the smaller banks were being purchased by the large banks, I looked into the credit union industry. I was familiar with credit unions as I got my first car loan through a credit union my father was a member of.

So you got your start in traditional commercial banking?

I started my financial career with Bank of America downtown in the old financial district, Seventh and Spring. I worked for Bank of America for 18 years then left and went into the community bank arena.

What’s the best aspect of being a credit union officer as opposed to a commercial banker?

The best aspect of my job is having the opportunity to assist our members with their financial needs. When it comes to personal service, the credit union industry today is like what banking was 25 or 30 years ago.

The worst?

The worst part would be an inability to assist our members when a financial crisis occurs. Sometimes a crisis is beyond our control – medical bills, the loss of a job or the inability to pay their mortgage. Unfortunately there are times – not many – when we just can’t help someone. That is frustrating.

What has been the biggest change in the field during the past five years?

The challenge of ensuring we are in compliance with all the new and revised federal and state regulations that we have to deal with.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I have received was from my father: Maintain your level of integrity and treat all people with dignity and respect.

Tell us something your colleagues don’t know about you.

I volunteer through Zoe Children’s Homes in Thailand. Their mission is rescuing children from the sex trade and someday ending child trafficking in Thailand.
